The following links lead you to sites that promote learning both inside and outside of a classroom. Each site shares a common belief that learning is life long and that, if all members of a community share the responsability for learning, we would have healthier communities.

Learning Communities

The idea of people working together to support learning in the community is happening around the world. How a community does this is unique to specific places. These sites lead you to a few learning communities within Canada and Europe.

Informal/Experiential Education

Informal education simply means that learning outcomes and goals are not designed prior to students entering a program. Informal education programs usually create an experience for people to share. As you will see, many informal education programs are called "Experiential Learning" where you are challenged to identify what you are learning and how this will help improve the circumstances in your life and the lives of people around you.

Experiential Education is also used by schools and workplaces coming together to allow students to apply classroom learning in the community and workplace. The following sites lead you to a variety of organizations that support informal education and experiential education.

Learning Through Technology

As technology becomes more advanced and more accessible it opens up many opportunities for learning. Both teachers and students use information technology to widen their knowledg and use educational technology to gain specific skills.

In Hazelton we have a fully operational computer lab that is used by high school students wishing to complete their education in a different format. You can check it out at the First Nations High School. These sites support people using technology as an educational tool.

Formal Education

Formal education has a set curriculum and prescribed goals and learning outcomes. When a stuend enters a program she/he is informed of the goals and outcomes that must be reached in order to gain success. Formal education is the type of education found in classrooms across the world. These sites can give you information on formal education in Canada.
