The stunning March 8, 1991 decision by B.C. Supreme Court chief justice Allan McEachern begins this section of the exhibit. The decision, which not only dismisses all claims by the Gitxsan to their traditional territories, but rules indigenous title was extinguished in 1858 when B.C. became a colony, sends the chiefs reeling. In effect, it denies the existence of a current Gitxsan governing system. Non-Gitxsan and Gitxsan in the territories are impacted by the decision as direct action on the land continues.
