1993The Gitxsan governance system is alive and well and the chiefs want the Canadian and British Columbia governments to recognize something that exists. They appeal the McEachern decision to the B.C. Court of Appeal. There is intense public interest in the issue typified by the extensive mass media coverage encouraged by the Gitxsan. The B.C. Court of Appeal decision on June 25, 1993, rejects the notion of extinguishment of indigenous title and opens the door on ownership, jurisdiction and self-government. The chief’s wish of the ayookw, adaawk and daxgyet coming side-by-side, and intermingling, with the Crown’s authority is not yet dead.
