1994-96Once again, the pace towards bringing together the worldviews quickens as the door opened by the B.C. Court of Appeal decision in 1993 leads to the signing of the Accord of Recognition and Respect between the province and Gitxsan chiefs in 1994. The Accord sets aside further legal action in favor of negotiation and launches the Gitxsan, Canada and the province into the B.C. Treaty Process. Soon, lack of progress on substantive issues, such as governance at the treaty table, results in further direct action on the land with blockades of forestry activities on Gitxsan territories. This period of the exhibit ends in 1996 as B.C. suspends the treaty process to pursue the Delgamuukw case in the Supreme Court of Canada. Treaty talks collapse but not before much public education on the Gitxsan governance system takes place.
