1997 - 2002This final section of the exhibit covers the 1997 trial and decision by the Supreme Court of Canada and its repercussions on governance felt throughout the province and the nation. As they did early in the 20th century, the chiefs once again take their worldview to Ottawa. What they tried and failed to do through negotiation – reconcile the two dominant governing systems on the Gitxsan territories – is given a boost by the Supreme Court in a precedent-setting decision. As a result of the ruling, the province enters into a Reconciliation Agreement that sets the stage for reentry into the B.C. Treaty Process. But implementation of the Delgamuukw decision by provincial ministries remains slow and local economic hardship worsens. The chiefs continue in their efforts to use the Delgamuukw ruling to pursue how Gitxsan ayookw, adaawk and daxgyet and Western governance can coexist on the same land base through joint jurisdictional arrangements.
