Summary of document:
The tribal council represents all people of Gitksan andCarrier ancestry, regardless of status, if they belong to or descend from one of the following villages: Kitwangak, Kitseguecla, Gitanmaax, Sikadoak, Kispiox, Hagwilget and Moricetown.
The purposes of the tribal council are:
To preserve and promote the native heritage and identity of the Gitksan and Carrier people of northwestern B.C. within Canadian society.
To improve the social and economic independence of the Gitksan and Carrier people.
To achieve just resolution of the land claims and aboriginal rights issues of the Gitksan and Carrier people.
To promote and improve communications between members of the association and other native communities in B.C. and Canada.
To promote better understanding between native people and the general public.
To promote self-government for the Gitksan and Carrier people.
The tribal council is made up of members from each village, as well as two representatives of non-resident members. The tribal council executive is elected at the annual convention held each November.
To further the purposes of the tribal council, several agencies have been set up to deal with specific issues.
