B.C.'s native and business communities are eagerly awaiting the release today of court decisions on eight major aboriginal rights eases that could change the way land, fish and wildlife are managed in the province.
...The most important case is the massive land claim by the Gitksan and Wet'suwet'en people in northwestern B.C., who are suing the provincial government for the return of their land and control of local resources.
The claim was turned down in March 1991 by B.C. Chief Justice Allan McEachern, who decided that aboriginal title and rights were extinguished...
But regardless of the outcome in any of the cases, the losing side is expected to appeal to the Supreme Court of Canada.
